Parenting Mediation - Children Mediation

Oftentimes when parents separate, they don’t know where to start. This article will walk you through the parenting side of things to give you some insight on steps to take to resolve your parenting matters.

Some parents prefer to discuss arrangements between themselves. For those parents that reach their own arrangements without any professional assistance, it is encouraged that you document your arrangements for future reference. Signing your agreement will also add some weight to your agreement and is therefore highly recommended.

Mediation is the first step for separated parents who require professional assistance with their parenting matters.

  1. If you have just separated and don’t know where to start, you might benefit from attending an information session. In this session, the mediation process is explained in detail and the mediator will discuss how to be child-focused in your parenting matters. Once you have an understanding of what mediation is all about, you can commence the mediation process.

  2. When you commence the mediation process the first meeting will be a one on one chat with the mediator. This meeting is called an intake/assessment session. This is a confidential session between you and your mediator.

  3. The second party will be invited to participate in the mediation process after seeing the first party. If the second party is agreeable they will have an intake/assessment session of their own, which is confidential as well.

  4. After both intakes, the mediator will assess the case to ascertain if mediation is suitable. If the matter is not suitable all parties will receive a section 60i certificate that enables them to attend the Family Courts.

  5. Where the matter is suitable for mediation, the parties will be invited for their first mediation session. The parties will discuss arrangements that they would like to put in place for their children with the assistance of a mediator.
